I just felt like creating a song that is just a plain, normal song but that is also a little too shy to sound like one. A simple and straightforward melody, few effects and a simple bass. But everything sounding like it’s playing in the room next to you.

So I did.

Hive Buster

Even the names keep getting better. From Musical Instrument Digital Interface to ModPlug to Fruity Loops. Mmm, don’t those loops sound tasty! Well, mostly they didn’t. Certainly in the beginning. I was amazed by the beautiful interface of FL Studio but also so lost in its enourmous complexity that only a few clicks later I I created a killer beat. Literally.

Sometimes – though rarely would be a better word – a more or less decent sound popped up. And after a few days of experimenting like this, I collected enough of those sounds to knit together a song of about 2 minutes. So I did.

Hive Buster was actually not a very serious creation, it was more of an experiment. But maybe it’s useful for some weird psychological tests about the reasons for failure of indie artists. Who knows. That’s why I included the FL Project file, a how-not-to-do-it 101.

Retrix

Read the name and guess. Yep, Retrix is a remix of tetris. Am I not original?

The Retrix songs are the last tracks I made with ModPlug. I won’t say I mastered ModPlug, but I do say that I’m proud of this work and my control over ModPlug. However, I had the same feeling as when I made songs in MIDI: I realised the limits and wanted to get beyond them. So it was time to move on. I’m working in FL Studio now, but more on that later.

Retrix comes in many versions. Only 3 of ‘em are actually finished: a rock version, a trance / electro / techno / jumpstyle / whatever version, and one version that mixes the best of all versions, even those that didn’t make it. In respective order given the “awesum” names Retrix Rox, Retrix Trax and Retrix Mix. Am I not original?

I’m sorry that the .it files are not available for download, I lost them in a power-down. Learned the importance of backing up the hard way. As a sort of replacement I converted them to ogg for if you ever want to use them in a tetris game that would so much profit that you would have to pay for a mp3 license. In that case it would save you about 2 minutes at best. Yeah I know, I’m too good for this world. Now donate.

Always eager to try out new things, I took a shot at a classical composition. A flute (or something like a flute) quietly sings a melody over some chords. You read that right, boring as hell. If classical music is nothing for you, don’t download.

Stoneslide

As I got more and more control over the ModPlug tracker, I knew where the effects were, but sometimes I tend to overdo some of them. For example, in Stoneslide, I kinda turned the “Distortion” button a little too high, which gives the whole a very muddy feeling. That has the effect of blurring in the beginning, but I think it suits the rhythm quite well in the middle.

One of my earlier experiments with the ModPlug tracker. It’s not entirely finished, certainly the ending is somewhat weak. But I just discovered the “transpose” button back then, so up and up it goes!

All over the country is a quick and happy song – or at least it was meant to be. Don’t be discouraged by its slow start, it gets better.

As the title says, welcome on the official weblog for all the songs I produce in my spare time and publish under the megalomaniacal name Migisoft Soundworks. Don’t hesitate to post comments on the songs, I will read them and I will keep them in mind when I’m writing a new song.

Also, every song here is available for download for the price of €0.00. For you Americans that means $0.00. That’s right, they’re free. All of them. So in the rather improbable case that you like a song so much that you would’ve bought it otherwise, why not consider a tiny donation? The link on your right is clickable 24/7 and it won’t bite your mouse.

Though I am suprised that you actually read this far already, I must say that music is far more pleasing than text, so… what are you waiting for?
